I’m not the perfect person when it comes to gift giving. Most of the time, my resort would be to pop this question, “What do you want for Christmas?” or just give them money and have them buy what they want. Easy right? But I feel like, though I’m making it easy for me to find what to give, it sort of ruins the surprise.
So, how can we find the perfect gift without resorting to the hand-me-your-wishlist technique?
1. Consider your budget
Go easy with the bonus and make sure you have at least 20% (if not all) of it saved. Allot only a specific percentage of your money to your gift budget and stick to it (Yes, I’m preaching to myself actually.) Have a list of people you want to give gifts to and mark them with a specifc budget.
2. Observe their Interest
This would be easy if you know the person very well but it’s a bit challenging if he’s your inaanak you haven’t seen for some time. Maybe it’s time that you catch up a bit so you get a last minute refresher on his recent likings for gliders or drones. Knowing the person’s interest will also help you get gifts that he can actually use.
3. It should be age-appropriate
We need to need to balance practicality and the purpose of giving joy to the person we are giving gifts to. We should also be smart to decipher if for example a particular item or gadget is something that should already be given to a toddler or not. Consider the age.
4. Understand their love language
It will help us hit the bullseye if we understand their love language. Sometimes, we do not even need to purchase anything for a gift. It only takes a visit or an “I love you” to make a person happy.
5. Add a touch of “you” to the gift
Although giving gift is not about you, it can add a little something when you accentuate it with something of you – a handwritten note or a DIY gift wrap. It will speak a lot about how you put so much thought, time and effort on that gift that makes it even more special.
